BBB Name Used To Scam Consumers In Believing They Have Won With Publisher's Clearing House

As posted on December 2, 2011 on www.bbb.org

BBB Serving Metro Atlanta, Athens & Northeast Georgia issues alert regarding the use of the Better Business Bureau name and Publisher’s Clearing House.  Consumers are contacting BBB advising they are receiving calls from a Mr. Michael Carboni who claims to work for the Better Business Bureau.

Mr. Carboni alleged he was calling about an investigation BBB was doing on the award Publisher’s Clearing House presents to consumers.  The telephone number he provides is 876-479-7387.  He advises consumers they have won an award.

BBB warns consumers this is a scam and one of several we have seen using the Publisher’s Clearing House name.  Our office called the telephone number provided and we were told they were the “BBB.”  When we inquired where they were located they said Washington, D.C.  As we pressed for more information, they disconnected the call.

Consumers should be aware that area code 876 is in Jamaica where many scams originate today.

Federal law dictates that no money has to be paid in order to win a prize.  Also, the Better Business Bureau would never be involved in such a promotion or call consumers regarding pending investigations.  All correspondence from BBB regarding any complaint is sent via email or mail and would never request you call a telephone number out of the country or ask for money.

If you should receive any emails from Publisher’s Clearing House indicating you have won a prize, but need to send money, don’t!  Contact Publisher’s Clearing House directly for information at 1-800-459-4724, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST or visit their website at http://www.pch.com/
